A three-year-old boy, M. Rudran of O. Kovilpatti, drowned in a pit dug up for constructing a rainwater harvesting structure at his grandfather's house in Ondipulinaickanoor near here on Wednesday.

The police said that the boy had gone to his grandfather Manikandan's (60) house a few days ago.

Mr Manikandan had dug up a pit with a depth of over three feet outside his house for constructing a rainwater harvesting structure.

However, since it was raining since Tuesday night, the pit got filled up with rainwater.

Rudran, who came out of the house, fell into the pit at around 7.30 a.m.

The police said a neighbour who noticed the boy struggling inside the water pulled him out within a short while.

The boy was rushed to the Primary Health Centre at Kanniseri, where the doctor declared him ‘brought dead.’ The Amathur police are investigating.
