Boy ends life, corporal punishment alleged

A Plus Two student committed suicide by hanging himself at Kolasanahalli on Saturday. Corporal punishment is suspected to be the cause for this.

Danush, a student of Sri Vidya Mandir Matriculation Higher Secondary School at Palacode, was found hanging in his house.

His uncle Sarath Kumar told The Hindu that Danush's friends had informed the family that he was hit by two teachers, his head was slammed to the wall and was hit with shoes. Danush was also issued a note that he bring his parents to the school on Saturday.

Following this information, the family staged a road blockade to demand action against the school. The Hindu’s efforts to get response from the school and the Chief Education Officer in Dharmapuri went in vain.

Later, Mahendramangalam police held talks with the family and assured them of an investigation into the complaint. According to police sources, some students had also given their statement to the police.

Danush’s uncle said that if there was any complaint against a student, the school should reach out to the parents instead of beating the student. “Who gave them the right to slam a student's head against a wall, " he asked.

(Those in distress or having suicidal tendencies could seek help and counselling by calling the State’s health helpline 104 and Sneha’s suicide prevention helpline 044-24640050.)
