The bodies of two infants were exhumed from the backyard of a couple’s house in Kattradithattuvilai, in a case of suspected female infanticide, here on Sunday.

Acting on a complaint from District Child Welfare Officer S. Kumudha, the Kottar police registered a case under section 174 of CrPC (unnatural death) and initiated inquiries.

The District Child Welfare Office had received a complaint over phone about the suspected infanticide.

Immediately, a team of officials headed by Ms. Kumudha rushed to the residence of the mother of the babies, V. Divya, 29, and questioned her along with her husband.

Meanwhile, the buried bodies of the 10-day-old babies were exhumed and post-mortem conducted near the burial site in the presence of Agasteeswaram tahsildhar K. Arularasu, Ms. Kumudha and the Kottar Inspector of Police. The entire process took nearly two hours, said Mr. Aralarasu.

Only the forensic report would throw light on the cause of the babies’ death, police sources said.
