Tension in Tirupur as protesters and BJP supporters are locked in a face-off

A black flag demonstration by the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) led by its general secretary Vaiko and counter protests kept the Tirupur police on their toes on Sunday, hours ahead of the arrival of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

MDMK leader Vaiko said that he had no personal animosity against Mr. Modi, and was only opposing his anti-Tamil Nadu policies and actions.

Vaiko alleges betrayal

Amid waving of black flags and releasing of black balloons by the cadre, Mr. Vaiko said Mr. Modi had betrayed Tamil Nadu on issues such as Gaja cyclone, Cauvery, hydrocarbon/neutrino projects and Mullaperiyar and cautioned that the Dam Safety Bill would harm the federal set-up.

Even as the protest was on, a BJP functionary Sasikala climbed up a vehicle and raised slogans of ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ and allegedly hurled a slipper at the crowd. MDMK cadre allegedly attacked her with flag poles.

Police whisked her away to safety and later registered a case.
