A day after BJP State President Tamilisai Soundararajan admitted that her party delayed taking a decision on the Cauvery water sharing issue due to the Assembly elections in Karnataka, Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan on Saturday said the “new BJP government in Karnataka” would solve the crisis.

“After the BJP forms the government, we will meet the Karnataka Chief Minister within a month and discuss the Cauvery issue. We will keep the issues being faced by Tamils in mind,” he said.

His comments came close on the heels of Ms. Soundararajan’s admission that the Central government had been dragging its feet on the Cauvery issue as it was waiting for the elections in Karnataka to conclude. “The BJP has not hidden it, we have spoken about it openly. The DMK and the Congress, despite having been in power for 10 years, did not solve this issue. The BJP has asked for more time. Why? Because we anticipated the Karnataka elections. We did not hide it,” she had said.

‘BJP stands exposed’

AIADMK leader and Fisheries Minister D. Jayakumar on Saturday condemned Dr. Soundararajan's statement. “The people of Tamil Nadu are pained by such statements. Their [the BJP’s] intentions stand exposed, now that they have admitted that they postponed a decision [on the Cauvery issue] due to electoral considerations. This is wrong. We cannot accept it. We have opposed the Central government’s stand before the Supreme Court,” he said.
