The State Council of the CPI (M), which met here on Wednesday, called for reinvigorated protests against the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Central government and the AIADMK-led State government in Tamil Nadu for “betraying the interests of the people”.
The State Committee said that Tamil Nadu has seen a historical drought, which has led to many farmer suicides. In a statement, party State secretary G. Ramakrishnan said, “Despite the drought only a fraction of relief has been distributed. Farm labourers haven’t been given any relief. There is also tremendous water scarcity throughout Tamil Nadu but no effort has been made to refurbish water bodies in the State.”
He called for a CB-CID investigation into the killing of a security guard at the late Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s Kodanad Estate and the subsequent death of her former driver in an accident and injury to another suspect Sayan in a different accident.
The committee also discussed issues relating to education, loss of jobs in small and medium scale industries, unwillingness to implement liquor ban among others. Mr. Ramakrishnan criticised the centre for not releasing relief funds for farmers and its unwillingness to form the Cauvery Management Board. “They have been trying to impose the Hindi language over the non-Hindi speakers. They have also been trying to sabotage archaeological excavation at Keezhadi. But despite all this, the State government has no spine to oppose the BJP,” the CPI (M) leader charged.
