A bear cub that entered the Kotagiri town with its mother and a sibling looking for food got stuck in a gate.

Forest officials with the assistance of fire and rescue service personnel extricated it and and helped it reunite with its mother.

The female bear entered Donnington early on Saturday morning with her two cubs. The mother and her cubs were rummaging a dump for food near human habitations when one of the cubs that entered a house got its head stuck in the grill of the gate, forest officials said.

As the bear cub tried to extract itself, the mother bear tried to pull the cub out, but failed, a forest official said. For nearly an hour, the cub remained trapped.

On information from local residents, forest officials arrived with fire and rescue service personnel. They chased away the mother and the other cub. Then, using cutting tools they freed the cub from the gate.

Happy reunion

The officials released the cub near the Longwood Shola in Kotagiri where the mother and the other calf were last spotted. A team of forest staff were dispatched to keep tab on the cub.

Assistant Conservator of Forests (Nilgiris North Division), K Saravanakumar, said forest staff spotted all three animals together on Sunday.
