A farmer, who had grown tissue-cultured banana in 1.5 acres, committed suicide at Uppukottai village near Theni allegedly owing to financial loss on Tuesday.

The deceased was identified R. Azhaguvel (48). Police said the growth of banana was good in Azhaguvel’s farm and the fruits were at harvesting stage. But since the price of banana crashed he could not sell his produce. Commission agents offered rock bottom price for banana.

Not willing to sell the fruits at the low price, he did not harvest the fruits as he could not even meet the harvesting charge. He sold a small quantity of the produce in retail market, but it did not solve his financial problems. Sources said Azhaguvel had borrowed up to Rs. 3 lakh from various sources.

A dejected Azhaguvel consumed poison in his farm on Tuesday evening, and died on the way to hospital.

Acting on a complaint lodged by his son A. Arun, Veerapandi police have registered a case and are investigating.
