The pregnant tribal women and lactating women of the villages in Kollimalai Hills got vital tips on the importance of breastfeeding at an awareness programme held at the Semmedu Primary Health Centre on the hills recently.

The event was brought up in connection with the World Breastfeeding Week jointly organised by the Namakkal branch of the Indian Medical Association and the Inner Wheel Club of Namakkal.

‘Valaikappu’

Malliga Kulandaivel, former president of the Namakkal branch of the IMA, said that breastfeeding was the best way to give newborns the nutrients they need. Breast milk is highly nutritious with easy-to-digest proteins and natural immunities that protect babies against disease ad infection. Both the organisations organised a special ‘valaikappu’ programme for the pregnant women on the occasion.

Dr. Malliga along with Latha Venkatesh, president, Inner Wheel Club, Ramola Baranidharan, its treasurer, presented bangles, sandal paste and gifts to the pregnant women. The doctors of the Semmedu Primary Health Centre Gopalsamy, Yuvaraj and Logeswari, also gave tips to the tribal women on maintaining a healthy life.
