The police organised an interaction session with the transgenders to create awareness among the policemen on the problems confronting them in the city on Monday.

The office-bearers of the Salem Thirunangaigal Nala Sangam participated in the event which was held under the ‘Connect’ programme of ‘Humsafar Project’, New Delhi.

G. Subbulakshmi, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Law and Order, presided over the programme. She said that all should treat transgenders with dignity. The community should shun all the misconceptions about them.

The police personnel should ensure all help to the transgenders to enable them to lead a normal life like other human beings.

The community should accord proper recognition to them.

P. Pooja, president of the Salem Thirunangaigal Nala Sangam, A. Gopika, its secretary and G. Rasika, treasurer explained the activities launched by the Sangam for the benefit of the transgenders and also to create awareness on the various social issues and empower the community.

They said that police personnel have been treating the transgender community people with respect understanding their status.

The police force accounted for good officers and men, they said and added that the police can initiate action against any individual who committed crimes.
