The Government Arts College (Co-education) here has introduced automated admission system, using a special software, during the counselling for admission of students into various under-graduate courses.

It is the first government college in the district to introduce the automated admission process.

The system is already in vogue in Government Arts College, Coimbatore, and the government colleges in Chennai city.

The process has reduced the paper work and wastage of man power to a big extent, says R. Dhanalakshmi, principal of the college.

Prof. Dhanalakshmi told The Hindu that the college procured the special software for easy handling of the counselling session, and in the preparation of admission list.

The principal said just a single application is enough for seeking admission into any course and the OMR data sheet is designed in such a way that it will extract all the needed details of the students.

The OMR sheets are scanned and the details provided in it are verified with the data given by the candidates in the manually filled applications.

The counselling has evoked good response from the applicants. Of the 10,200 application forms for the 19 under-graduate courses sold out from May 4 to 20, 6,700 candidates have registered their names for counselling.

Counselling for the BA (Tamil literature), BA (English literature) and for vocational courses has already been completed in the last four days. A majority of seats have been filled, and the selected students have remitted the fees.

The counselling for girls for all the 19 UG courses is scheduled for May 29, and the counselling for boys for all the courses will be held on June 1, 2, and 3.

The college is expected to open for on June 2. They will attend a bridge course for two weeks.

The regular classes for all the courses will commence from June 18.
