Students of Anna University’s affiliated colleges from the 2017-18 batch onwards will henceforth get five chances to clear their backlog of subjects in which they failed in the first semester.

They will be allowed to write the exams every semester till the end of the fifth semester, said Vice-Chancellor M.K. Surappa. “By the time they enter the fourth year, they should have cleared all the first semester arrears. Otherwise, they will be sent back to the first semester class,” Mr. Surappa said.

The university introduced choice-based credit system for the batch.

The students, many of whom barely qualified to get into engineering, could not cope with the rigour of the course. The failure rate was very high in the last two semesters, officials said.

Affiliated college teachers also supported students who went on a mass strike across the State in January demanding that the CBCS system be revoked. The Syndicate approved the decision during its recent meeting.
