Tension prevailed at Paapaakudi in the district on Sunday night after a youth was hacked by an armed gang belonging to another community.
As the annual festival of Kannimaaramman Temple at Paapaakudi in the district is to be celebrated shortly, cleaning the premises of the place of worship was taken up on Sunday. When the waste collected from the temple premises was dumped in the nearby ground, a group of youths from another caste, who were playing cricket there, opposed it.
When the argument between two sides became heated and subsequently led to a scuffle, cricketers’ friends went to the residential area of the opposite group in a few bikes and allegedly hacked A. Velmurugan that triggered tension in the night, sources said.
Demanding the arrest of the attackers, relatives of Velmurugan blocked the Kadayam – Tirunelveli highway that caused serious traffic snarl in the busy stretch.
After being pacified by the police, the protestors went to the police station and filed complaint against Raja, Thangaraja, Chelladurai and three others.
Based on this complaint, police have picked up three persons for interrogation.
