Attack on escort policeman

The Bagayam Police have registered cases against eight remand prisoners in the Central Prison for Men, Vellore.

They have been charged for attacking the sub-inspector who escorted them to a Chennai court and scolding him in vulgar language on Thursday night.

According to police sources, the accused — Suresh Kumar, Murugan, Surendar, Deva, Arunkumar, Rajesh, Sathish Kumar and Rahman of Chennai — were remanded to judicial custody in connection with various criminal cases in Chennai.

They were being escorted by Nagooran, Sub-Inspector of Police, Arakkonam Taluk Police Station to the Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court, George Town, Chennai on Thursday. When they were brought back to the Vellore jail after production in the Chennai court, the prisoners allegedly attacked the Sub-Inspector.

They used foul language agains him for not providing them with food, beedi and cigarette which they had demanded.

On a complaint from Mr. Nagooran, the Bagayam Police registered cases against the eight prisoners under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.
