M. Karunanidhi, five-time Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK president for nearly 50 years, died at 6.10 p.m. on August 7 after battling infection and age-related ailments for 11 days at the Kauvery Hospital in Chennai. Affectionately called ''Kalaignar'' (artiste and man of letters), he was 94.

Here is a series from The Hindu examining the multiple roles he played: from championing social justice, to being a die-hard proponent of the Tamil language, from shaping the Dravidian movement to being a lifelong warrior for Sri Lankan Tamil cause.
