The Association of University Teachers (AUT) has appealed to Governor-Chancellor R.N. Ravi and the Higher Education Department “to suspend” and “immediately remove the incumbent” Vice-Chancellor and registrar-in-charge of Periyar University.

The association said the university officials had victimised K. Prem Kumar, general secretary of Periyar University Teachers’ Association, who is currently under suspension for allegedly leaking the agenda of the syndicate meeting. He was later charged with sexual harassment case under the SC/ST Act, said AUT general secretary M.S. Bala Murugan.

The AUT has sought a thorough inquiry into the abuse of authority by the two officials. The letter stated that the two officials had tried to use their power to influence the syndicate by introducing in the agenda reemployment of a retiring professor, in violation of the University’s statutes.

In another development, the Association’s central executive has christened its building in Chennai in the name of N. Senthamarai, a former president of the association, who died recently. A book, The Policy Perspectives of the National Policy of Education (NEP) 2020: A Semantic Discourse, was also launched on the occasion.
