Ration cards not to be invalidated for not making purchases

January 02, 2017 07:41 am | Updated 07:41 am IST - CHENNAI:

The Civil Supplies Department has clarified that it would not render inactive or cancel ration cards on the grounds that essential commodities have not been purchased through them for three consecutive months.

In a circular, the office of the Civil Supplies Commissioner referred to complaints of commodities not having been provided to beneficiaries who sought them after a gap of three months. Such beneficiaries had registered their Aadhaar details through Point-of-Sale (PoS) machines with their respective fair price shops.

Making it clear that the beneficiaries should not be denied access to the commodities, the circular stated that before cancelling any card, the field officials at the fair price shops should conduct a proper inquiry.

The circular added that lists have been prepared with respect to those who have furnished their Aadhaar details and those who have not done so, adding that these lists are being scrutinised.
