The officers and soldiers of Madras Regiment, the oldest regiment in the Indian Army commemorated Army Day with a great deal of pride and considerable patriotic fervour at Wellington on Thursday.
A wreath laying ceremony at the imposing War memorial of the Madras Regiment formed part of the occasion.
Lt General S.K. Gadeock, Commandant, Defence Services Staff College (DSSC), the senior most serving officer and Brigadier S. Suresh Kumar, Commandant, Madras Regimental Centre (MRC) and Station Commander, Wellington Station led the officers at solemn wreath laying ceremony to pay homage to martyrs and rededicate themselves to the cause of nation.
Lt Gen S .Pattabhiraman, laid a wreath on behalf of the veteran officers.
Army Day is celebrated on January 15 every year in recognition of Lieutenant General (later Field Marshal) K.M. Cariappa taking over as the first Commander-in- Chief of Indian Army from Francis Butcher, the last British Commander on January 15, 1948.
