Armed Reserve replaces police at counting centre

Changes made based on report by Additional Chief Electoral Officer

Days after the visit of Additional Chief Electoral Officer V. Rajaraman to the counting centre in Karur, Armed Reserve police personnel from Tiruchi and Pudukottai districts have replaced the Karur police at M. Kumarasamy College of Engineering, where the EVMs used in polling stations in the Karur Lok Sabha constituency have been stored.

The changes were made after Mr. Rajaraman submitted a report on security arrangements to Chief Electoral Officer Satyabrata Sahoo.

Mr. Rajaraman carried out an inspection a few days ago following a complaint by Congress candidate S. Jothimani, who apprehended that the election officials had failed to put in place adequate security arrangements at the counting centre.

V. Varadharaju, Inspector General of Police, Central Zone, told The Hindu that three-tier security was in place. While Border Security Force personnel manned the strong room, State Armed Force personnel were in the inner cordon, and the outer area security would be taken care of by Armed Reserve personnel. “A foolproof security arrangement is in place in and around the counting centre. Senior officials will check the place frequently,” he said.
