Appeal to shift drinking water pipeline work

January 26, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:45 am IST - TUTICORIN:

The Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has appealed to Tuticorin Corporation authorities to change the route of laying the fourth pipeline of drinking water project, underway at an estimated cost of Rs 282.44 crore. As per the project design, water would be pumped from Marudur dam to all parts of the city, including the fringe areas that experience erratic water supply.

MDMK district secretary S. Joel said on Sunday that the ongoing project would be much beneficial to the people, but he sought the authorities to skip Pudukottai Main Bazaar area from laying the water pipes and instead take the pipeline through Palayamkottai By-pass Road. As part of the project, preliminary ground works were on to connect the pipelines from Pudukottai union office junction to Thattaparai post enroute Pudukottai Main Bazaar area, which was too narrow and caused hardship for the people, he said.

Traders, office-goers, school children and road users would be affected once the water pipelines work was taken up. Already, the third pipeline was laid through the main bazaar area. Buses were also plying through the narrow stretch. If the demand to shift laying of the pipeline was not considered, the MDMK cadre would stage a protest, he added.
