Any decision I take will be based on merit, says Purohit

The newly-appointed Governor of Tamil Nadu, Banwarilal Purohit, who was sworn in during a ceremony at the Raj Bhavan here on Friday, said that all of his decisions would be based on merit, and that there would be “no political considerations”. He added that his job was to ensure and observe “total transparency and cleanness” in the State government.

During his brief interaction with the media shortly after his swearing-in ceremony, the Governor said that his actions would be guided by the Constitution, and that he would preserve and protect the Constitution at all costs.

“All the decisions which I am going to take, small or big, [there] will be no political consideration...The Governor’s office is above politics, everybody can be rest assured...All the decisions will be on merit,” the Governor said.

‘Will use influence’

Stating that he would “wholeheartedly support” the State government as far as developmental activities were concerned, the Governor added that he would use his influence in New Delhi for the welfare of the State. “I have good friends in almost all the Ministries. I will see [to it] that a lot of development takes place, [and that] more funds are provided to our Tamil Nadu...I will try my level best,” the Governor said.

The Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, Indira Banerjee, administered the oath of office to the new Governor.

Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami, Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam, Ministers and Leader of the Opposition M.K. Stalin were present at the occasion.

Deputy Lok Sabha Speaker M. Thambi Durai, Minister of State Pon. Radhakrishnan, Assembly Speaker P. Dhanapal, judges of the Madras High Court, Chief Secretary Girija Vaidyanathan, DGP T.K. Rajendran, senior State government officials and members of the Consular Corps also took part.
