Annamalai joins issue with Finance Minister on GST dues

Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai on Monday joined issue with State Finance Minister Palanivel Thiaga Rajan over his comments that he was not in the business of responding to ill-informed statements by ‘unqualified people’ on public platforms.

In a series of tweets, Mr. Annamalai charged that Mr. Thiaga Rajan’s “love for travelling in big airplanes & his plain outsized ego all the time overrides plain common sense! A person holding a public office is expected to refrain from outbursts, slander and abuses when asked questions.”

Mr. Annamalai said in December 2021, the Finance Minister declared that ₹16,724 crore was the pending GST compensation. “As per the Budget, the pending compensation of this year expected as grant-in aid is ₹6,447 crore. This matches with the RTI response received in January 2022. Why did the FM make a wrong claim in the pre-Budget presentation?,” he asked.

During the protest against the Budget last week, Mr. Annamalai had claimed that Mr. Thiaga Rajan had stated in the Budget that the total pending GST compensation for Tamil Nadu was only ₹6,500 crore which had been received, but that Mr. Thiaga Rajan had been lying all along that ₹16,500 crore was pending.

In a tweet on Monday, Mr. Thiaga Rajan referred to the Union Finance Minister’s Budget speech and pointed out that the GST compensation pending to all the States was ₹53,000 crore for the current financial year.

Further, referring to his Budget speech over Mr. Annamalai’s claim that the GST dues had been received by the State, he pointed out the part — “...the pending GST compensation dues will be received from the Union government in the coming year.”
