Anna Arivalayam to pay higher property tax

The Chennai Corporation has issued notice to the DMK Charitable Trust, demanding payment of Rs. 2.7 crore after a reassessment of property tax for Anna Arivalayam, the party headquarters.

Three buildings on the premises of Anna Arivalayam at Teynampet on Anna Salai, belonging to the trust, have been covered in the reassessment. Last year, the Corporation carried out a field verification of the area of the Anna Arivalayam main building, dispensary, studio and Kalaignar Arangam.

Kalaignar Arangam, at new number 367, Anna Salai, will have a revised property tax of Rs.14.4 lakh for a half-year period. The existing rate for Kalaignar Arangam is Rs. 91,346.

Corporation officials, who inspected the structure, have reassessed the tax based on the charges collected for each marriage function held at Kalaignar Arangam.

According to officials, the rental for functions at Kalaignar Arangam was fixed at Rs. 4.25 lakh by the trust. The Corporation’s revenue department has also fixed an annual rental value of Rs.1.16 crore for Kalaignar Arangam, based on which the revised calculation has been made.

According to a report submitted by the revenue department, the property tax reassessment for the Anna Arivalayam main building is based on an annual rental value of Rs. 83.3 lakh. After the reassessment, the property tax for the Anna Arivalayam set of structures every half year is to go up by about Rs. 24 lakh.

A total of Rs.2.7 crore in arrears (for a six-year period) has to be paid by the trust, according to the notice. The civic body is set to issue notice to under-assessed buildings that measure more than 10,000 sq. ft. this month.
