Anganwadi worker held for caning child

January 09, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:38 am IST - SALEM:

An Anganwadi worker who caned a two-year-old child and inflicted injury was arrested here on Thursday.

Muthuvel, a lodge owner, was married to Madhavi. The couple has two children — an 11-year-old girl and two-year-old Riteesh. Muthuvel used to drop Riteesh at the Anganwadi in Four Roads while Madhavi would pick him in the afternoon.

On Wednesday, she found injury on the boy’s hand and leg. She questioned the workers at the centre , but did not get an answer.

She took Riteesh to the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital and later registered a police complaint. Inquiries by the Pallapatti police revealed that an Anganwadi worker, Vijaya (53), had caned Riteesh.

Police registered a case under Section 324 of the IPC (causing hurt by weapons) and arrested Vijaya. She was produced in court and lodged in the women’s sub-jail.
