Ambedkar statue desecration causes tension at Nemeli

January 08, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - KANCHEEPURAM:

Tension prevailed for some time on Wednesday after a statue of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar at Nemeli near Sriperumpudur was found garlanded in a ‘disrespectful manner.’

Supporters of the Viduthalai Chiruthaikal Katchi, led by its State deputy general secretary Menaka Komagan, gathered in large numbers at Nemeli at 9 a.m. and raised slogans demanding an immediate arrest of the culprits. They squatted on the road, causing a traffic jam on the Chennai-Bengaluru National Highway. They allowed the removal of the objectionable materials from the statue and withdrew agitation after the police assured them of action against the culprits.
