Alternative medical practitioners seek protection

January 23, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:49 am IST - Tiruvannamalai:

Unqualified Medical Practitioners (UMPs) submitted a petition to the District Collector demanding protection.

They, under the aegis of ‘Tiruvannamalai District Alternative Medical Practitioners Federation’ submitted a memorandum to Collector A. Gnanasekaran on Thursday stating, “We are folks practicing systems like Siddha, Ayurveda, Homeopathy and doing first aid for patients and help poor patients that way. We never used fictitious titles, degrees and we enjoy the good will of the people. We cooperated in government’s leprosy eradication and TB eradication programmes. We properly guided our patients with regard to these programmes. Hence considering the welfare of people and our livelihood please ensure our profession is protected and not belittled.” They also demand that the Collector be pleased to provide them Unqualified Medical Practitioners (UMP) certificate as recommended by Justice Subramani in 1998.

When asked about their demand, Mr. Gnanasekaran said they claimed that they have a judgment in their favour to practice alternative systems of medicine and I asked them to produce the judgment copy. But I also made it clear that they could not be allowed to practice allopathic medicine under any circumstances.
