The deft handling of the issue by the State Government ensured that there was no disruption in commissioning and running of the Kudankulam Atomic Power Plant, Mr. Panneerselvam said.

Tamil Nadu has demanded allocation of 100 megawatt (MW) from the Kundakulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP)’s second unit too.

In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam referred to reports that Telengana had been given 50 MW out of the unallocated 150 MW from the second unit.  He recalled that in a memorandum submitted by his predecessor, Jayalalithaa, to Mr Modi in June, the State had sought the allocation of the entire 15 per cent unallocated power in the two units of the KKNPP.

Mr. Panneerselvam mentioned how Tamil Nadu had provided all necessary inputs such as land and water for the “expeditious completion” of the project “while neighbouring States were not supportive. The deft handling of the issue by the State Government ensured that there was no disruption in commissioning and running of the Kudankulam Atomic Power Plant,” he said, adding that Ms. Jayalalithaa had taken “prompt and effective steps” to allay the fears of the local people regarding the establishment of the plant.

The Chief Minister also stated that in September 2012, the Union government set apart to Tamil Nadu 100 MW of unallocated power from the KKNNP’s first unit. He requested the Prime Minister to direct the Union Power Ministry to allocate 100 MW from the second unit immediately to the State.
