AITUC to press for more benefits in new wage pact

All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) state president K. Subbarayan said the trade unionists would press for introduction of House Rent Allowance (HRA), medical insurance and education/maternity allowance in the salary in the new wage pact to be drafted soon. He told this here to reporters as the new four year-wage pact for knitwear workers in Tirupur cluster had to be signed shortly. “Rising house rentals is a deterrent for the predominant migrant workforce in Tirupur cluster and hence, a minimum monthly HRA of Rs. 3,000 should be given. If the demands are not met, we will think of even going for agitation”, he said.

The AITUC was of the opinion that the minimum basic wages for an eight hour shift should be fixed at Rs. 577.
