‘Trace victims allegedly molested by a policeman’

The All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) filed a petition in the Madras High Court seeking departmental action against a policeman who allegedly sexually assaulted two Rajasthani women and two children at Hosur in Krishnagiri district in October this year.

AIDWA president U. Vasuki also wanted the court to direct the Additional Director-General of Police, CB-CID, to trace the victims who allegedly went missing after the incident. She also demanded a compensation of Rs. 5 lakh to each of them and wanted the State Commission on Protection of Child Rights to monitor the case.

The petitioner said an article was published in The Hindu on October 10 and 11. The police picked up the victims, who were selling plastic wares at the Hosur bus stand, on October 8. They were taken to the Hosur outpost police control room, where they were allegedly molested.

Ms. Vasuki said they were subsequently subjected to ill-treatment by police and revenue authorities. “The victims were detained at the Shoolagiri police station on October 9 and were taken for a medical examination. On October 10, they were made to wait for a long time for an inquiry by the Revenue Divisional Officer,” she said.

Later, the policeman was suspended, but no FIR was filed. The National Commission for Women constituted a team to inquire into the issue. But the team’s visit was cancelled after the district police officers said the women had gone missing. However, the commission asked for an action-taken report from the Krishnagiri police.

The efforts of AIDWA representatives to trace the women and the children proved futile. “Since the accused is a policeman and the department has been trying to hush up the matter, I suspect that something would have happened to the women,” she said.

The First Bench, of Chief Justice S.K. Kaul and Justice M. Sathyanarayanan, ordered notice to the Home Department and the police and posted the matter to December 22.
