Aid for mentally challenged children

A total of 316 mentally challenged children, including mentally retarded ones, were identified in Bodi union in the district and all assistance extended to them, said Collector N. Venkatachalam.

Addressing a meeting and special medical camp meant for mentally disabled children at Veerapandi near here on Wednesday, he said that various welfare schemes meant for women were being implemented through Magalir Thittam and Pudhu Vazhvu Thittam in four of the eight blocks in the district.

Similarly, special schools were functioning to handle children having developmental disorder. Parents should admit such children to government-run special school and help them live independently, he advised.

Later, the Collector distributed aid worth Rs. 4.36 lakh to 43 beneficiaries and saplings to 200 beneficiaries.

A special medical camp was also organised at the meeting venue to treat such children, and offer orientation and training to improve their skills to be independent.
