Mr. Bose, a three-time MLA, had been unwell for the last few years and was admitted to a private hospital on Wednesday evening.

Ruling AIADMK MLA A.K. Bose, representing Thiruparankundram Assembly Constituency, died in Madurai on Thursday. He was 69. The constituency will now witness a second by-election in two years as his predecessor had died within days of being elected in May 2016.

Mr. Bose, a three-time MLA, had been unwell for the last few years and was admitted to a private hospital on Wednesday evening. He died at around 1 a.m. on Thursday, said Madurai North Assembly constituency MLA and party's Madurai district secretary V.V. Rajan Chellappa.

Mr. Bose is survived by his wife Bagyalakshmi, two sons and two daughters.

Mr. Bose started his political career as a member of AIADMK youth wing. He had also served as party's Madurai urban district secretary. He became MLA for the first time in 2006 from the Thiruparankundram Assembly Constituency. He won from the Madurai North Assembly Constituency in 2011, but was denied a seat in the 2016 assembly general election.

However, following the death of S.M. Seenivelu who was elected, but died before taking oath as MLA, Mr. Bose contested in the by-election to Thiruparankundram Assembly segment and became the MLA for the third time.

He was one of the fence-sitters when former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa's close confidante V.K. Sasikala and T.T.V. Dhinakaran were expelled from the party.

Mr. Bose had also unsuccessfully contested for the Madurai Lok Sabha seat in the 2004 election.

Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam expressed their condolences. "Mr. Bose was loyal to AIADMK and to Jayalalithaa," a party statement said.

Both leaders, alongwith other State ministers and leaders will visit Madurai to pay homage to Mr. Bose, Mr. Chellappa said.
