Congress retains Kamaraj Nagar seat in Puducherry.

AIADMK co-coordinator and Chief Minster Edappadi K Palaniswami and coordinator and Deputy CM O. Panneerselvam described the victory as a “certificate of commendation” given by the people.

DMK president M.K. Stalin said many had voted for his party and Congress despite “misuse of money and power” by the ruling party and some political parties’ attempt to take advantage of “casteism”.

“We treat the people’s verdict as the verdict of Mahadeva. As far as the DMK is concerned, we maintain equanimity in the face of defeat and victory,” he said.

The performance of Seeman’s Naam Tamilar Katchi was way below par with its nominees securing a vote share of a mere 1.55% and 2.05% in Vikravandi and Nanguneri respectively.

Nanguneri and Kamaraj Nagar fell vacant following the resignations of H. Vasanthakumar and V. Vaithilingam of the Congress on their election to the Lok Sabha this summer, while the vacancy in Vikravandi arose in the wake of the death of K. Rathamani (DMK) in June.

Though it was known that the bypoll outcome would not have any bearing on the continuance of the Palaniswami government, both the AIADMK and the DMK made it a prestige fight. Mr. Palaniswami and Mr. Panneerselvam campaigned separately in the two constituencies, besides assigning electioneering work to all Ministers and senior party functionaries.

As for the DMK, the focus was on Mr. Stalin and his son-cum-secretary of the party’s youth wing, Udhayanidhi Stalin. The DMK’s campaign centred around the theme of the AIADMK government being a “puppet regime” of the BJP-led government at the Centre, which was out to “impose” Hindi and Sanskrit on people of the State. The AIADMK countered their campaign by saying that the DMK had been seeking to revive “dynasty politics”.
