Ahead of Pongal, CM kicks off gift distribution

1.56 crore sarees and as many dhotis to be given away at a cost of ₹484.25 crore

Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami launched the distribution of sarees and dhotis to beneficiaries at the Secretariat on Friday, in view of the Pongal festival next month.

A total of 1.56 crore sarees and an equal number of dhotis would be distributed to beneficiaries at a cost of ₹484.25 crore.

Handlooms and Textiles Minister O.S. Manian, Revenue Minister R.B. Udhayakumar, Chief Secretary Girija Vaidyanathan and senior government officials were present on the occasion.

The scheme was launched in 1983 by AIADMK founder and former Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran.

The Chief Minister also inaugurated through video conference classrooms and labs for State-run colleges in Ariyalur, Chennai, Coimbatore, Cuddalore, Dharmapuri, Kancheepuram, Karur, Madurai, Namakkal, Thoothukudi, Tirupur and Tiruvannamalai districts at a total outlay of ₹25.24 crore.

Higher Education Minister K.P. Anbalagan and Chief Government Whip S. Rajendran were among those present during the event.
