Recent advancements in medical field backed by years of research have given new hope for those afflicted with schizophrenia.

The stigma attached to the medical condition of the patient needs to be addressed to ensure that those suffering from the disorder could lead a near normal life, Dean, Thanjavur Medical College, P.G. Sankaranarayanan said here on Monday addressing the medical professionals and visitors at the World Schizophrenia Day observed by the Department of Psychiatry.

Speaking on the various aspects of the debilitating disorder, Head of Psychiatry Department Dr. S. Ilangovan detailed the facilities available for treating the patients with the disorder.

It was important that the family members and friends of the patients extend additional care to them so that they did not feel any inconvenience, he emphasised.

He said that the world schizophrenia awareness week was being observed during the third week of May and the TMCH's Department of Psychiatry conducted a public outreach programme.
