Sothuparai dam will be desilted and Adukkam-Periyakulam ghat road will be laid shortly, according to Collector N. Venkatachalam.
Commencing distribution of freebies to beneficiaries within Periyakulam municipal limits on Sunday, he said that underground drainage work was being implemented in the municipality. The recycled water under the UGD scheme would be utilised for agriculture purposes, he added.
Already, TWAD Board had been implementing drinking water project at an estimated cost of Rs. 16 crore to augment drinking water supply to Periyakulam municipality, he noted. Adukkam Road would be laid shortly to create the shortest route to Kodaikanal from Theni district.
Explaining the importance of welfare schemes, the Collector said that the main objective of the marriage assistance and gold for ‘thali’ was not only to remove hurdles in the marriage of poor women but also to motivate them to study well.
Education was the yardstick to offer marriage assistance to them. Graduate women would get more financial assistance under the marriage assistance scheme. Gold worth Rs. 34 crore had been distributed to 10,132 beneficiaries in the district, he pointed out.
In the fourth phase, free mixers, grinders and fans worth Rs. 34.31 crore would be distributed to 91,208 beneficiaries in the district.
