Action taken

Following a letter in Reader’s Mail on poor lighting and civic amenities in Manickam Nagar, street lights have been made functional now. I thank the municipal corporation for the immediate action taken. Similarly, we expect the damaged road to be repaired soon before the winter season sets in. Garbage should be cleared regularly without leading to unhygienic conditions in the area.

R.D. Sathiya Rajesh,

Run non-stop

express train

We appreciate the steps taken by the Southern Railway to provide regular trains through Kumbakonam to various points, even to northern destinations. It is time to recall that there were representations on several occasions for providing non-stop trains with chair cars from Kumbakonam to Chennai.

The Mahamaham festival is fast approaching and a large number of devotees from all over the country are expected to participate in the festival. The Southern Railway should operate a A\C chair car- nonstop train between Kumbakonam and Chennai.

S. Krishnan,

Enforce discipline

There has been increase in the use of obscene language in buses where college students are unmindful of the presence of girls. The TNSTC should take necessary action to control this at the earliest.

G. Sathyanarayanan Iyer,

Increase frequency

The frequency of weekly Kacheguda Express and Lokmanya Tilak Express and the bi-weekly Sampark Kranti, Nagercoil-Mumbai and Tiruchi-Howrah express trains should be increased as it has been long time since they were introduced.

G. Nallasivan,

Laudable effort

Both the Union and State Government are planning to pump in huge sum of money in planting saplings on both sides of the roads. This is going to be highly productive to everyone. In the ancient days, rulers had followed this method to offer employment, income generation, and green coverage to all. In the new initiative, care must be taken to plant highly productive species of trees. Tamarind, neem, and other kinds of saplings must be planted.

A. Prabaharan,

Run a train via Vellore

Railway authorities must introduce a new train from southern cities via Tiruchi to Vellore daily as Vellore is a city with important educational institutions and places of religious and archaeological interest. No direct train is available daily from southern cities, except the Rameswaram-Tirupati Express which runs thrice a week. It will be helpful if the Railways introduced a train from southern cities to Chennai Central via Vellore.

fisheries colleges

At present, there are only three constituent colleges of Tamil Nadu Fisheries University (TNFU). Tamil Nadu may consider setting up Fisheries Colleges affiliated to TNFU at Cuddalore, Adirampattinam, Thondi, and Kanyakumari to cater the needs of the students, particularly those belonging to the coastal districts of the State.

A. Haja Abdul Khader,

SC order not

While barring the government from insisting on Aadhar card as mandatory requirement for availing of any benefit or service, the Supreme Court asked the government on August 11 that it should give this order wide publicity in print and electronic media. Though more than two weeks have lapsed, we have not come across any special announcement about this by government at least, in print media. It is baffling why our MPs, political parties and the media, are not raising their voice against the government for not complying with the Supreme Court order.

K. Natarajan,

Build smart

Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's announcement on implementation of a slew of measures, including setting up of e-service kendras in 3,890 places, improvement of rural roads, installation of eight lakh LED street lights, solid waste programmes in 2,000 village panchayats and skill development training for youths, would give a shot in the arm for rural development. Such a firm policy aimed at creating smart villages will be a healthy alternative to the urbanisation.

R. Pichumani,

Make it easy

for elders

Mahamaham will be held at Kumbakonam in six months. Every Mahamaham attracts lakhs of people from all over India.

It cannot be different this Mahamaham. Every Mahamaham, senior citizens have to put up with inadequate arrangements. It would be a yeoman service if separate queues and enclosures are made available for senior citizens aged above 65 for taking a dip.
