Two persons, who came in an autorickshaw, handed over the baby to a woman on Saturday when she was walking on the road

After being abandoned by his family, a one-and-a-half-month-old baby got a new home at a government-licensed NGO based in Tirupattur.

Officials of the Social Welfare Department said two persons, who had come in an autorickshaw, had handed over the boy baby to a woman, who is a resident of Madhakadapa, at Vaniyambadi on Saturday.

“The woman was walking down the road and the persons told her to give the baby to a woman dressed in yellow sari at a nearby temple. When she took the child to the temple, she searched around but did not find any such woman,” an officer said.

Following this, she approached the All Woman Police Station at Vaniyambadi and informed the police.

After conducting an inquiry with her, the police handed over the baby to the District Social Welfare Office.

On Monday, S. Pahitha, district social welfare officer, handed over the baby to the NGO — Society for Rural Development Promotion Services — under the cradle baby scheme in the presence of District Revenue Officer K. Manivannan.

The NGO is a government-licensed adoption placement agency.

Officials said that as per procedure, they would wait for two months to see if any family comes forward claiming the baby.
