With a colourful celebration at the Ooty Lake, the curtain came down on the 2015 Pongal festivities in this popular vacation destination on Saturday.

Titled ‘Sutrula Pongal’, the celebration organised by the Department of Tourism and the district administration was aimed at involving tourists in commemorating the occasion.

Displaying considerable enthusiasm tourists from various parts of the country shared the piping hot pongal served to them by the Nilgiris Collector P. Sankar.

Commending the organisers, a tourist from Thiruvarur told The Hindu that normally one does not associate such festivals with the Nilgiris. Hence, “the pleasant surprise will linger in our memory for long.” Another tourist from Coimbatore said that one should be lucky to celebrate Pongal in such a weather.

Performances by folk artistes from the plains and distribution of pamphlets, which highlighted the significance of Pongal, marked the occasion.
