A quarrel with Kamal

While Muktha Films has produced several films, one of its most memorable movies, Nayagan, is still ranked among one of actor Kamal Haasan and director Mani Ratnam’s best works.

Commemorating the 25th anniversary of the release of the film, Kamal Haasan had written an article in The Hindu about how there had been differences among him, the director, Srinivasan and Muktha Films about the budget of the film.

Srinivasan wrote a rejoinder titled ‘Living in past glory’ the following week, in which he said that he had always considered film as an art, reacting to Haasan’s article in which he had said the movie would have come out better if the producer had been more cooperative and had more vision.

“I have been a producer and director for more than 60 years. Without passion for cinema, I could not have made more than 40 films with great stars like Sivaji Ganesan, Gemini Ganesan, Rajinikanth and Jayalalithaa. I have a reputation for producing good movies and believe that audience deserves quality films,” Srinivasan had said.

Haasan visited Srinivasan’s house on Wednesday to pay his last respects.

In his tribute to Srinivasan, he said that Nayagan , which was produced by him, had brought them both laurels.

“He gave me the right to criticise when I was just 18 years old. I sang my first song Gnayiru Oli Mazhaiyil in his movie Andharangam, ” he said.
