A day after wooing him, TNCC presidentslams Kamal Haasan

Says he was unaware of actor’s critical comments against DMK

A day after inviting actor and Makkal Needhi Maiam founder Kamal Haasan to join the DMK-Congress alliance, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K.S. Alagiri on Sunday slammed the actor for criticising the DMK.

In a statement, Mr. Alagiri said he had invited Mr. Haasan to join the secular alliance only because the actor had taken a stand against the ‘Sanatan’ forces and was a supporter of secularism. “I invited him with the good intention that the anti-BJP votes should not get split. When I made the comments [inviting him], I was not aware that he had used harsh language to criticise the DMK,” Mr. Alagiri said.

A few days ago, Mr. Haasan said his party would contest the upcoming Lok Sabha polls alone as he did not want to ally with corrupt parties.

“The very reason why we came into politics was to displace both of them [DMK and AIADMK],” he had said, adding that there was no question of joining hands with either of these parties.

“Such criticism at this time will only help the BJP in the elections. I condemn his unnecessary and unwanted statements criticising the DMK,” the TNCC president said, adding that it will be the secular alliance led by the DMK and the Congress that will decide which parties can join the front.
