Ramanathapuram: B. Lakshmi (50), a widow from Sambakulam in Mudukulathur taluk, has been running from pillar to post for the past 10 days to draw an assistance of Rs. 12,500 sanctioned by the government towards the funeral expenses of her husband who died six months ago.

After her husband Bakiyam (55), a card holder of Uzhavar Paadugappu Thittam (UPT), died, she had applied for the assistance. On learning that the assistance had been credited to her bank account recently, she had been trying in vain to withdraw the money.

The Bank Correspondent (BC), attached to State Bank of India (SBI) branch at Melaikudi, had been dodging whenever Lakshmi approached her to help her withdraw the amount, said A. Murugesan, her neighbour. As she was linked to the BC, she could not directly approach the bank branch, he added.

The poor woman had ‘spent’ nearly Rs. 4,500 to get the assistance and she could not withdraw the money even after it was sanctioned. She had three daughters and her son was casual labourer in Paramakudi, he said.
