With educational institutions reopening for the new academic year, Commissioner of Police T. Rajendran has warned of stern action against those indulging in ragging.

Talking to reporters here on Friday, he said heads of institutions were advised to inform the local police if there were complaints of ragging on the campus. Police personnel in plainclothes would be deployed near women's colleges to prevent eve-teasing.

Mr. Rajendran said police had launched a crackdown on unauthorised security agencies. “Private security agencies have to get registered in the office of the Director General of Police. There are complaints that many are operating without adhering to the norms prescribed under the Private Security Agencies (Regulation) Act.”

He said that there was an increase in net-banking frauds and a meeting of bankers would be convened soon to discuss ways and means to prevent such offences.

In the last 15 days, the Chennai Police had apprehended 53 persons involved in 53 cases. 155 sovereigns of gold jewels, Rs. 1.19 crore cash, four cars and motorcycles were recovered from them.
