The Department of Radiology of Christian Medical College (CMC) organised a walkathon on Tuesday to create awareness on vascular anomalies among public.
Around 80 to 100 persons, including undergraduates, postgraduates, consultants of radiology, and radiography technicians of CMC took part in the walkathon that was flagged off from near Vellore Fort by P. Pakalavan, Superintendent of Police, Vellore. CMC’s director Sunil Thomas Chandy also took part in the walkathon that ended near Periyar Park.
According to a press release, nutrients needed for the effective functioning of body parts are carried through blood and lymphatic vessels called as lympho vascular channels. Any aberration in the development of these vascular channels can lead to various diseases that can affect any part of the body from head to toe.
These vascular anomalies can range from a simple birthmark to life threatening diseases, and may manifest at birth or later in life, the release said.
Doctors said these marks were easily recognisable, and with prompt consultation with doctors, appropriate treatment was possible. With interventional radiology, easy and effective treatment was possible.
However, doctors noted that awareness on vascular anomalies and timely diagnosis were poor. Pamphlets were distributed to people during the walkathon.
Shyam Kumar, head of Radiology, CMC was present.
