DINDIGUL: Tension gripped Chinnalapatti near here as a section of people from Alamarathupatti village laid a siege to Chinnalapatti police station, condemning filing of a “false case” against their village head by a Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam functionary, Rajendran, on Monday.

Rajendran lodged a complaint against village head Kannan and six others stating that they were attempting to murder him. When the police summoned Kannan and others to the police station, they refused to go to the police station, stating that it was a false case.

When the police insisted on their reporting at the station, more than 100 people laid siege to the police station, condemning the police for their immediate response to a false case and demanding action against Rajendran.

The police also summoned Rajendran to the police station. Rajendran, on his part, demanded selection for a new village head. The police assured the protesters that they would conduct a peace meeting on January 21 in connection with the selection of a new village head.

Earlier, Rajendran reportedly interfered with the conduct of ‘kuthu vilakku puja’ organised at the village as part of Pongal festival, and declared himself as the village head. As the local people asked him to go away from the place, he left the place and lodged a complaint of attempted murder against Kannan and the others with Chinnalapatti police.
