Distribution of prizes to the winners of various competitions marked the end of the two-day Valvil Ori festival, flower show and tourist vizha at Semmedu in Kolli Hills here on Tuesday.

The highlight of the day was the archery competition held for different categories on the bus stand premises in Semmedu as participants were asked to aim at five pictures of elephant, tiger, deer, pig and monitor lizard, which King Valvil Ori, who ruled the hilltop, killed with a single arrow simultaneously. Students from across the State participated in the competition and winners were felicitated.

Oratorical competition, cultural programmes and essay writing were held to celebrate the festival and Collector M. Asia Mariam distributed prizes to the winners. Also, prizes were distributed to the departments that had put up stalls that exhibited the various schemes and projects implemented by the department. Horticulture Department was awarded the best stall while the Cooperative and Sericulture Departments were awarded the second and third prize respectively.

On the occasion, the Collector said that the festival had brought together people from various walks of life that showcased our culture and tradition. She added that for the benefit of the tourists, two new boats were put to use at the boat house.

Special buses were operated from various places to Kolli Hills during the festival and tourists thronged the hilltop in large numbers on Tuesday. The district administration had earlier declared local holiday on Tuesday towards the festival.

District Revenue Officer K. Palanisamy, RDO M. Kannan, C. Chandrasekaran MLA, and Additional Superintendent of Police S. Senthil participated.
