DMK working president M.K. Stalin welcomed the Supreme Court judgement, saying it had laid the norms for politicians in public life.

“Justice has been upheld after 21 years. It has restored the order of the trial court convicting late Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and three others. It is a historical judgement and has set norms for politicians on how to lead public life,” he told reporters.

Mr. Stalin also urged Tamil Nadu Governor Vidyasagar Rao to take steps to install a stable government in the wake of the judgment. “He must use the Constitutional powers vested on him,” he said.

PMK founder Dr. S. Ramadoss said the Supreme Court verdict was most welcome since it has reinforced the trust in judiciary. Had this verdict been pronounced before the 2016 Assembly elections, the present political stalemate could have been avoided and the history would have been different.

Still, the conviction in the two-decade long case has finally proved that justice triumphs. While the judgement has saved the State from Sasikala, the AIADMK MLAs should resign on moral grounds as the party was able to win the elections only after Jayalalithaa’s acquittal in the High Court, he added.

Meanwhile, PMK youth wing leader Dr. Anbumani Ramdoss urged the Governor to hold talks with all the legislators to prevent horse trading and install a stable government in the State.

‘Confiscate assets’

Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary G. Ramakrishnan said that the verdict would strengthen the hands of people fighting corruption in public life. The assets should be seized in this case. The Governor should move on to the next course of action and should not allow instability, he urged.

The Supreme Court verdict has come as a shocker for all the corrupt in the nation, said Thol Thirumavalavan, president, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, who welcomed the verdict. But as the verdict was delayed, confusion has gripped Tamil Nadu. As Jayalalithaa has not been cleared of charges, the AIADMK government has no right to continue. Assembly elections would be the only way out, he said. Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK) leader M.H. Jawahirullah said the verdict has come as a boost to people working to curtail corruption in public life. He also stressed that the Governor should act immediately and install a stable government.
