June 19, 2010 12:58 am | Updated 12:58 am IST - ERODE:

A boulder was found on the track near Vijayamangalam railway station on Thursday night. The driver of a goods train while passing through the Ingur–Vijayamangalam section around 8.30 p.m. on Thursday heard a loud noise as the engine hit the boulder. Sensing trouble, the driver informed officials at the Vijayamangalam station. No damage, however, was caused to the line or the engine and traffic was not affected.

Railway personnel from the station found broken pieces of the boulder and reported the matter to senior officials and the police. Railway Protection Force personnel, officials from the ‘Q' branch and Superintendent of Police Jayachandran inspected the spot.

Police launched a detailed investigation, as the State had witnessed a blast on the track near Perani in Villupuram district recently. This is the third attempt on the Ingur–Vijayamangalam section in the last two years.

On November 26, 2009, stones were found on the track near the Ingur railway station. The incident delayed two goods train and a passenger train for over an hour.

On December 24, a cylinder used was found on the track near Perundurai. The empty cylinder exploded when it came under the wheels of Coimbatore-Nagercoil Express. As no damage was reported, little effort was made to nab the culprits.

Mr. Jayachandran said a few persons were playing mischief on railway track.

A team has been formed to identify the persons involved in this act.

“We will maintain continuous vigil along the tracks,” he added.
