The demonetisation move has helped the Municipal Corporation to improve its tax collection in the past two weeks. It had crossed Rs. 7.55 crore on Monday.

Officials said that total tax collected from April 1 to November 8 is Rs. 27.82 crore in which property tax is Rs. 12.84 crore, water tax Rs. 8.69 crore, non-tax Rs. 3.22 crore, profession tax Rs. 27.92 lakh and other tax at Rs. 20 lakh.

The announcements were made to the public through the public address system asking them to pay the tax arrears in old notes.

Also, all the tax counters remained opened on weekends.

Officials said that from November 9 to 21, the total tax collection stood at Rs. 7.88 crore, including property tax Rs. 3.72 crore, water tax Rs. 3.58 crore, non-tax Rs. 48.77 lakh, profession tax Rs. 5.29 lakh and other tax at Rs. 4 lakh.

However, despite the Corporation Commissioner K.R. Selvaraj requesting the residents and building owners to pay the deposit amount for the Underground Drainage (UGD) scheme, the civic body did not receive single deposits. The total tax collection for the current year crossed Rs. 35.62 crore, but not single deposits received towards UGD.

Officials asked the people to utilise the opportunity and pay the deposit amount by November 24 after which Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000 currencies would not be accepted.
