TNCC election schedule released for booth to district level posts

The All-India Congress Committee on Saturday announced election schedule for various posts in the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee, right from booth to district levels.

Announcing the schedule, Ravi Mallu, Chairman, State Election Authority and Pradesh Returning officer of Tamil Nadu, said the election process would start on July 18 and would be completed by July 26. Elections to office-bearers of State level body (TNCC) would be announced later. Nominations for the posts of booth and panchayat committees would be received on July 18, scrutiny would be on the next day and election if necessary would be conduced on July 20. For Town panchayats, municipalities, and corporations, applications would be received on July 21, scrutiny would be on July 22 and the elections would be on July 23. For district and urban Congress Committees nominations would be received on July 24, scrutiny would on the next day and the elections would be conducted on July 26.

Addressing newspersons here, Dr. Mallu said there were about 60 lakh eligible primary members in the party and 1.09 lakh special members.

While primary members were eligible to contest various office-bearer posts, only special members could contest for the post of presidents, vice-presidents, and treasurers at all levels. He said the existing presidents who had been occupying the posts continuously for the last six years were not eligible to contest for the same posts but they could contest for other office-bearers’ post. Reservation had been provided for women (33 per cent), and for SC/ST/OBC/minorities (20 per cent). Eligible members who wanted to contest could download the application from the official website of the TNCC.

Pradesh Congress Committee president K.V.Thangkabalu, who was also present on the occasion appealed to party workers to cooperate with representatives of the AICC in conducting the elections. If the members had any grievance they could bring it to the notice of the State Election Authority or to the TNCC. They should not air their views in public or through the media, he added.
