Stone idol of Vinayaka stolen

A 1.5ft tall stone idol of Nartana Vinayaka in the Palipeedam at the entrance of the Sri Iravatheeswaraswamy temple at Dharasuram near Kumbakonam was found missing on Monday.

Employees of the Archaeological Survey of India which maintains the temple, found the idol missing and lodged a complaint with Kumbakonam Taluk police station.

Iravatheeswaraswamy Temple, built by Rajaraja II, is an architectural marvel and is one among the all stone temples built by the Chola Kings. The other two are the Big Temple at Thanjavur and Ganangaikondacholapuram Temple in Ariyalur district.

Replete with intrinsic sculptures, the temple modelled like a chariot has been declared as a world heritage monument by UNESCO.
